GRÄV 2014 – Masha Gessen – The woman behind the man ( Putin) without a face

– Some people has suggested that´s Putins is insane and inconsistent. My argument is that he´s very consistent. All the things you´ve heard about his ant-gay campaigne, invasion of Crimea, to jailing of his opponents to the release of his opp0nents, all that fits neatly in one mind, says Masha Gessen, russian-american author and journalist, to the book - The woman behind the man without a face- about the president of Russia Putins way to the power.

Masha Gessen research of Putin is simple.

– I was listening. I listened very carefully to what he said. In fact, people tells you everything if you just listen. The problem with the world was that they were projecting other things on him than he pretended to be.They neglected to listen to him until it was to late.

Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term in 2008. Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election and appointed Putin as Prime Minister, beginning a period of so-called ”tandemocracy”. In September 2011, following a change in the law extending the presidential term from four years to six,Putin announced that he would seek a third, non-consecutive term as President in the 2012 presidential election, and won the election in March 2012 and is serving a six-year term.

Many protesters against the election

In december 2011 people gathered in Moscow to protest against many years of sham elections. There was a spontantious march of 10 000 people and hundreds of people got arrested.

– It was a mess, a wonderful, beautiful mess. It felt liberating to us. Ten days later there were more than 50 000 people protesting i and ten days after that it was over 100 000 people. And what was Putins reaction to that? He saw traitors and enemies, and people who were personally inspired by the US department by Hillary Clinton. He did´nt say it by accident, he said it because he believed it because he had been taught this decades ago, says Masha Gessen.

Please, listen to the clip if you want to hear more from Masha´s seminar at Gräv 2014 22th of march in Umeå, Sweden.
