GRÄV14 – David Leigh, The Guardian- New Forms of Global Data investigation

– I think that I´m living in a golden age of investigative journalism, because I think it´s become possible to do new things. In the last few years I´ve been involved in three major investigations which has broken new ground, says David Leigh, investigative journalist at The Guardian who has been handling Big Data leaks from hacktivists as WikileaksChelsea Manning (former Bradley Manning) and Edward Snowden.

The Guardian has been pioneering the last 3-4 years in developing new tools and techniques to present Big Data leaks for example by data visualization of interactive maps of bombings in Afghanistan.

– If you want a job in journalism as a young person today, data is what you have to become an expert in, says David Leigh.

The first major leak to The Guardian came from Julian Assange, Wikileaks in 2010, but it turned out that he was a difficult partnership.

– The Guardian is not a very good friend with him anymore, and it turned out that he´s not a good friend with many people.

Five newspapers collaborated

It all started with the material from Wikileaks. For the first time in the world five editors of competing national newspapers collaborated on the story of Wikileaks, New York Times, Le Monde, El Pais, The Guardian and  Der Spiegel. The reason why they collaborated was that they wanted to show the world the victims of the Afghanistan war.

– New stuff is coming up all the time, the hacktivists material is very hard to research with dozens of code names, you don´t know what they mean and what you´re looking for. We just recently found about Yahoo´s webcams with everybodies private parts on them in Snowdens material. The material is full of surprises.

Hacktivist has a different ideology than conventional journalists.

– They think that all information should be free, they want to be able to spy on the government. You can´t control hacktivists. It´s different for journalists. We think:  What in this material is interesting to publish?, says David Leigh.

David Leigh was recently rewarded with the only ”Lifetime achievement award” as one of the best investigative journalist in the world.
