Sara Qvarlander

I work as a researcher in the Umeå Hydrocephalus Research Group. Mainly I work with modeling and analysis of the pressure in the brain (intracranial pressure) and the flow dynamics in the fluid system that surrounds the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid system). My research is mainly focused at developing and validating protocols and analysis methods for lumbar infusion measurements, which are performed at the Neurological Department at Umeå University Hospital. I am the project manager for a Nordic multicenter study where we investigate whether this type of examination can be used to personalize the treatment of so-called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

My latest project is about image analysis for identification of changes in brain structure related to disturbances in the cerebrospinal fluid system using neural networks. I also work in research regarding the newly discovered glymphatic system of the brain.

As of 2023, I am responsible for the Swedich National Quality Registry for Hydrocephalus, which is part of Swedish neuroregisterSince September 2023 I am also a part of the board för the international "Hydocephalus Society" (ISHCSF), and I am part of the editoral board for the scientific journal Fluids and Barriers of the CNS.
