This is Region Västerbotten

Welcome to Region Västerbotten! This page is about what the Region does. We are here for you who live and work in Västerbotten. Our main work is in health care and regional development in the county.

Region Västerbotten is a politically controlled organization that works for the entire county. Our mission is to offer and develop health care, health treatment, and regional development together with people, the business sector and social actors. The Region is responsible for health and medical care and regional development. We take care of our place – Västerbotten. We also offer university hospital level healthcare for northern Sweden and carry out cutting-edge national and international research.

Our driving force is to create a safe and strong Region that people want to live in, move to, work in, visit and collaborate with. We show how good health and sustainable development are interconnected and that they work to strengthen each other.

Our main missions are:

  • Health and medical care, and dental care
  • Public health and social welfare
  • Public transport
  • Regional development and culture
  • Research, innovation and education
  • Commitment to the county's interests nationally and internationally

Health and medical care

Region Västerbotten must make sure that the people of Västerbotten can access the care they need and also provides specialised care for all of northern Sweden and national specialised care for brachial plexus injuries.

There are three hospitals in Västerbotten County: Norrland University Hospital in Umeå, Skellefteå Hospital and Lycksele Hospital.

Region Västerbotten runs health centres in all the county's municipalities. In some places there are also private health centres. Some of the Region's health centres also have inpatient beds.

Together with the municipalities in the county, the Region is also responsible for ensuring that people with reduced functional capacity receive habilitation or rehabilitation so they can manage their everyday lives as well as possible. This includes them receiving assistive devices that make everyday life easier and increase their opportunities to live an independent life.

Dental care

Region Västerbotten is tasked to promote good dental health throughout its population. Care can be provided by the Region's own dental care (called Folktandvården) or by private care providers. The Region is responsible for ensuring that all children and young people in the county are offered regular, health-promoting dental care. Through Folktandvården, we also ensure that general dental care is available throughout the county and provide specialised dental care and care for patients with special needs. The Region also contributes resources to education and patient-centred research at dental clinics and works closely with the Department of Odontology at Umeå University.

Public health

Through activities such as Västerbotten Health Surveys, Region Västerbotten finds out how its residents feel and plans initiatives to achieve good health on equal terms for the entire population. Good public health means the best possible health situation for as many people as possible, with the smallest possible differences between those who are worst off and those who are best off.

Public transport

Region Västerbotten is also responsible for public transport in the county, together with Länstrafiken i Västerbotten, the municipalities and other actors who work with, and use, public transport. The Region finances bus services that run between municipalities and across county borders. The municipalities finance the bus routes within each municipality.

Region Västerbotten also finances train services in the northern regions together with Region Norrbotten, Region Västernorrland and Region Jämtland Härjedalen.

Regional development and culture

Region Västerbotten is also responsible for regional development in the county. This includes infrastructure, business and innovation, international cooperation, strategic site development, labour market, tourism, IT and digitalisation, education, culture, EU project applications and business support.

Research, development and innovation

Research, development and innovation are important for healthcare, welfare and regional development. We work closely with Umeå University and carry out both patient-oriented research and research into specialised areas.

Popular education

Region Västerbotten owns two folk high schools: Vindeln and Storuman. Through popular education, these schools aim to contribute to people's opportunities to influence their life situation and encourage people to participate in social development.

The term popular education is used to describe free and voluntary education. In addition to folk high schools, libraries and study associations, for example, are usually considered popular education centres.
